Sanctity of Life Sunday will be observed on the 18th of Jan, 2004 - the Sunday closest to the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. Its focus - according to websites and pastors - is on the unborn and euthanasia. They aren’t my issues; instead I want to ask this - why is the focus only on them? What of the sanctity of life for the civilian "collateral damage" deaths of war? Do we care about the sanctity of life for those our society kills directly with capital punishment, or indirectly by letting our children live without even basic health care? What of the millions dead in African wars funded by our diamond purchases, the millions more dead by starvation and AIDS? Does “sanctity of life” apply to those worked to death in Third World sweatshops to guarantee always low prices? The sanctity - the sacredness - of life is one of the great principles we can hold. We cannot abandon it - or pretend it doesn't apply - simply because it's inconvenient, or might cost us a little more, or requires our aid half a world away. We should observe the sanctity of life during life, not just at the beginning and end.
