Math Story Books

Ruthann sends this:

A few of us complied this list of story books that deal with math topics.
If you know of other titles, I would be happy to add them.

-------------

Crossing the River With Dogs from Key Curriculum Press. A puzzle-book
curriculum book that is good for a year of work.

Math for Smarty Pants
The I Hate Math! Book?
both by Marilyn Burns. They are in no way textbooks and are a lot of fun.

Inside, Outside, Loops and Lines. by Herbert Kohl. It's about topology.

Math by All Means. Marilyn Burns

Beyond Facts and Flashcards: Exploring Math with Your Kids. by Jan Mokros.

Family Math. form the Lawrence Livermore Lab.

Read Any Good Math Lately? by David J. Whitin and Sandra Wilde.
A resource book for more math oriented children's books (with examples of
    "classroom" use).

2x2=BOO! : a set of spooky multiplication stories.
    by Loreen Leedy. ISBN 0-8234-1190-7
This book is especially effective at showing 2x0=0 with disappearing
bats. book has a cute witch and black cats, playful and fun.

Fraction Action.
    by Loreen Leedy. ISBN 0-8234-1244-X

Even Steven and Odd Todd
by Kathryn Cristaldi. a Hello Math Reader level 3.
ISBN 0-590-22715-7. this one is funny and Patrick at 8yo still enjoyed
    it.

Get Up and Go! a Math start book on time lines
by Stuart J. Murphy. ISBN 0-06-446704X paperback

The Best Vacation Ever. a Math Start book on collecting data.
by Stuart J. Murphy. ISBN 0-06-446706-6

Give Me Half! a Math Start book on understanding halves.
by Stuart J. Murphy. ISBN 0-06-446701-5.

George Shannon's _Stories To Solve_ books (ages 7 and up)
Fun puzzlers, good to read out loud and share.

Mitsumasa Anno's _Anno's Math Games_ picture books (age 4 and up)
Cuddly, sit-on-the-lap picture books that introduce all
sorts of math concepts in a zany but well-done way.

Theonni Pappas' math books (age 7 and up)
Starring Penrose the mathematical cat, these books introduce
classical mathematics and mathemagic in a storybook format.

Raymond Smullyan's puzzle books (age 10 and up)
These are meant for adults. Smullyan is a mathematician and
logician and his logic puzzles are a heady brew. We like to
read them aloud together in small doses.

_Sir Cumference and the Knights of the Round Table_ (age 4 and up)
A very silly picture book about why pi are round.

_Calculus By and for Young People_ (age 7 and up)
Nicely done, but I'd do it differently.

_Family Math_ (age 2 and up)
This is the Lawrence Hall of Science math book. Lots of games
and activities, mostly for younger children. There's now a sequel
          for older kids.

Harold Jacobs' math books (they are *really* good -- the man
deserves to be a patron saint of homeschooling) (age 12 and up)
These are textbooks, but they're very well-done.

_Trachtenberg Mathematics_ (age 10 and up)
An old speed arithmetic program; very interesting.

_Hands-On Equations_ (the algebra game) (age 4 and up)

G is for Googol: a math alphabet. (age 5 and up) by David M. Schwartz
          A mathematical alphabet book; nice.

_Mathematicians Are People, Too_ (age 8 and up)
A biographical approach to math; good for putting the people
          angle back into math.

_The Man Who Counted_ (age 9 and up)
Another book of logic puzzles in story form. M. likes
it so much that she keeps almost choosing it when it's her
turn to pick the family read-aloud.

One Grain of Rice: a mathematical folktale. by Demi. ISBN 0-590-93998-X
    lovely book. wonderful pictures.
Summary: A reward of one grain of rice doubles day by day into millions
of grains of rice when a selfish raja is outwitted by a clever village
    girl.

The Number Devil: a mathematical adventure. by Hans Magnus Enzensberger.
translated by Michael Henry Heim. isbn 0-8050-5770-6
Summary: Annoyed with his math teacher who assigns word problems and
won't let him use a calculator, twelve-year-old Robert finds help from
the number devil in his dreams.
Some people don't like this book, but my boy really likes it and has
read it repeatedly, absorbing the concepts from it. He is resistant
to most formal arithmetic and math.

_Mastermind Mathematics_ (age 10 and up)
A mathematical logic course using the Mastermind game. M. loved it.

Singapore Math
Textbooks used in Singapore. Easily the best math texts I've
ever seen. On par with Jacobs, but they go all the way from first
grade through high school. Rigorous, and interesting.

-------------------------------------------------------
And computer games:

_Logical Journey of the Zoombinis_ computer game (age 3 and up)
_Zoombini Mountain Rescue_ (age 3 and up)

Richard Scarry's _Best Math Program Ever_ computer game (age 2 and up)

Cluefinders 9-12 Math computer game

Treasure MathStorm (age 4 and up)

Gazillionaire (age 6 and up)

Singapore Math Primary games (Rainbow Rock, Vroot and Vroom, Wiggle
Woods)
