The game goes okay - although the premise is
improbable (some girl
gets imbued with special powers to fight the Deep Ones and Ghouls),
Crispin pulls it off pretty well. PC's return home.
PC in question returns shortly before Mom and Dad,
opens door to
find blood pool in hallway, leading to living room where girls in
question are murdered, except for sis, who is muttering "Bluh Mare" in
front of the broken open window
Cue Title
Monday at school. Detectives have pored over
house, family is
living in hotel (be sure to award Drama point!). PC's are largely
self-directed at this point.
Event-spawned things:
Research will turn up the legend of bloody mary as
described in all
urban legends - a vaguely difficult research roll, though, will find a
more specific legend in an old book. "Bloody Mary" is a ghost of a girl
scorned by her peers in the mid-fifties who went on a small killing
spree. It was largely hushed up at the time, but this is the source of
the urban legend. "Legends tell that you can awaken her from the dead
by..."
There's a picture of her....
NOTE TO ANYONE ELSE RUNNING THIS: It should be made
clear to the PCs
that Mary requires a concious host (she feeds of the host's terror at
being aware of what is being done to them). Destroying the mirror
"Mary" manifested from will trap "Mary" in this realm, in whatever host
she's in. If that host is made unconcious, she is left without a host,
and dies. If you don't make this clear, they'll be directionless (I
didn't, and that was the roughest point of this episode).
If they search out the Salvation army store, they'll
find that one
of the workers there rather resembles the picture of "Mary". She is
evasive and avoids meeting thier eyes. She's very shy, but knows
nothing about what is going on. If they ask about the mirror, SA hasn't
had any mirrors like that for a long time. Successful relations type
rol will get them to volunteer the info about the peddler, otherwise
they might hear about him by a worker complaining about him being
around "I hope that mirror guy doesn't show back up".
Mirror guy is found only a block or so over, and sure enough, he does
have lots of mirrors. Some are vaguely similar to the ones found, and
have intricate designs on them. An occult roll will ID them as some
kind of offshoot of the Elder Sign. The peddler knows nothing, and is
barely able to keep change. If questioned, he'll spout off something
about "the dark man"! "The dark man!"
(If they hunt him down later, like my PC's did,
he'll have been
fully possessed and ruptured all of his clothing. Or eaten. Whichever
you wish. The remaining mirrors are all shattered.)
After questioning, a fellow student will stop one of
PC's (whoever's
most "into it"). "Dude, did that bum say something bad to your mom?" "I
dunno - I just thought that since your mom was just talking to him, he
might of said something. I guess she just bought one of his
mirrors...."
PCs, I hope, would head home immediately.
PCs come in door to find mom's back to them in the
living room. She
turns around, mirror in hand, her face ... changed. "Mom's not home
anymore. Mary is!"

Beating Mary to a Pulp will leave Mom, unconcious (but not dead),
and bruised.
KILLING Mom (swords, stakes, etc) may be harder to explain.
PC's call for help from mom, hug, cry, camera moves
to another room,
where we see a face look, ever so briefly, out from a mirror.
