I would like for my politicians to be plain-speaking and straight-shooting. Which is why I distrust those who have ready answers for everything. Thing is, the world is a horribly complicated place, whether we like it or not. There are always shades of grey, shadows blurring the edges of meaning on concept we think should be simple: evil, terrorists, taxes, the Iraqi people, or Americans. It's not easy. That complexity doesn't fit in a sound bite. Our brains don't like it - we're more comfortable with clear generalizations than murky nuances. But the real world is complex - and that's the way a true plain-talker speaks of it. I'd prefer a complex truth over a simple lie - even if the lie makes a better sound bite. |
