No matter how we might want to ignore it, we cannot ignore our environment – especially our air and water. They are things that everyone must have, regardless of race, creed, or income level. Though they are not covered by estate taxes, they are the most important thing that we leave for our children. Yet these basic, fundamental things are not receiving the same kindness that the estate tax recently did. On August 29, the Environmental Protection Agency stated that it could not regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act – a complete reversal of the EPA’s stance over nearly a decade. That’s right, the government agency whose mission statement claims they exist to “protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment — air, water, and land” states they cannot perform their mission. This is, unfortunately, a typical example of the policies of George W. Bush’s administration, from altering scientific reports to favor big business to the Department of Energy attempting to abandon millions of gallons of radioactive waste near large freshwater sources. We cannot treat the environment as recklessly as President Bush’s administration does without harming our health and the health of those yet to come.
